Getting a Vintage Porsche 911 Ready.
A Little Bit of History
Being a mechanic with German heritage (a story for another day), I always wanted a Porsche 911 ever since I was very young. After having three kids and edging closer to my 40s, I began noticing the old school air-cooled Porsches rapidly climbing in value. I realised it was now or never.
While scrolling through a car-sale website (something I did frequently back then), I found this little gem on the Gold Coast - just within a budget I could stretch. Without even a second thought I pulled the trigger and bought the car for what now is a song.
Not long after I stripped it down and gave it a major overhaul, including an engine change when the Aussie dollar was strong. And then life happened, and she became a garage queen for many years.
Several years ago, my youngest daughter graduated high school and wanted the Porsche as her ride for the occasion—how could I say no? With life slowly returning to normal after the virus of unknown origin 😉, at that time I was really struggling financially, but I managed to get the car somewhat serviceable for the evening. After that, she went back into the garage… until now.
She Needs a Lot of Work!
Letting a car sit idle for years is never good, and the gremlins have crept in, leaving me with plenty to fix before our adventure can begin. The first job was replacing the tyres, which were more than 15 years old. Next, I’ll be taking her to my local Porsche specialist to get her up on the hoist for a proper inspection. I already know a few things that need attention and suspect a few more. For now though she is drivable and I’ve been taking her out regularly to blow the dust out, so to speak.
What Comes Next?
To keep the channel moving forward, I’m planning a studio shoot at work featuring the car and our camping gear. As well as that, within the next few weeks over the Christmas break I’ll create a YouTube welcome video for the channel.
A New Beginning!
This site—and all associated social platforms (YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram)—will hopefully become a journal of our camping adventures in this wonderful old car. We plan to share the camping spots we visit, the gear we use, and the meals my partner (a chef) will be whipping up at camp. Along the way, we’ll be documenting our adventures and creating lasting memories.
